Qualcomm präsentiert neuen LTE-Baseband-Chip mit weltweiter Kompatibilität, perfekt für iPhone 5 und künftige iOS-Geräte
Mit der 5. Generation der Gobi-Plattform präsentierte Qualcomm heute eine neue Spezifikation für Mobilfunk-Chips, die (beinahe) alle weltweit verwendeten Mobilfunk-Standards in einem Chip vereinen soll.
Die Referenz-Plattform kommt zwar etwas zu spät, um noch im iPad 3 zum Einsatz zu kommen, ebnet aber den Weg für zukünftige iOS-Geräte mit echtem “Weltchip“. und ist speziell auf ultradünne Mobilgeräte ausgerichtet.
Neben GSM/3G und CDMA soll die nächste Gobi-Generation auch den schnelleren LTE/4G Standard in FDD- und TDD-Netzen auf der ganzen Welt unterstützen, und dabei auch auf Rückwärts-Kompatibilität mit den “3.5G“-Technologien HSPA+ und EV-DO setzen.
Damit ist lokal die Nutzung von schnellen 4G-Netzen gewährleistet, und man kann in technisch weniger weit fortgeschrittenen Regionen auf 3G bzw. GPRS zurückgreifen.
Die Plattform bietet außerdem integrierte GPS-Funktionalität, und kann über Entwickler-Schnittstellen (APIs) an weitere LTE-Erweiterungen wie CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO Rev. A und B, Dual-Carrier HSPA+ oder TD-SCDMA angepasst werden. Kurz gesagt: Alles in einem!
Apple nutzt schon seit längerem Qualcomm-Chips in iPhone und iPad, und wird Gerüchten zufolge im iPhone 5 und iPad 3 erstmals auf LTE-fähige Chips setzen. Im Fall des iPhone 5 vielleicht sogar schon auf einen neuen Gobi Chipsatz der 5. Generation.
Bisher verzichtete Apple zugunsten von Design und Batterieleistung auf den LTE-Standard. Mit den neuen Gobi-Chips dürften die hohen Anforderungen von Apple endlich erfüllt sein.

Qualcomm Announces Fifth Generation Embedded Data Connectivity Reference Platform
Newest Addition to Gobi Platform Family is Industry’s First to Support Multiple LTE Bands on a Single Device for 4G Connectivity
SAN DIEGO – February 21, 2012 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced its fifth generation Gobi™ embedded data connectivity reference platform for mobile devices, including thin form factor laptops, tablets and convertibles. Based on Qualcomm’s Gobi 4G LTE wireless baseband modems, the MDM9615™ and MDM9215™, the technology delivers fast LTE connectivity on FDD and TDD networks worldwide, with backwards compatibility to both HSPA+ and EV-DO networks. This will allow support for regional LTE frequencies with backwards compatibility to existing 2G/3G technologies, allowing Gobi 4G LTE devices to connect to the faster LTE network locally and stay connected to the Internet globally on 3G networks worldwide. The reference platform will support leading operating systems, such as Windows 8 and Android. It is also designed to support these leading operating systems on multiple processing platforms, including our Snapdragon™ dual-core and quad-core processors and x86 platforms.
Embedded modules based on the Gobi fifth generation reference platform will initially be available from Huawei, Novatel Wireless, Option, Sierra Wireless and ZTE in several form factors and regional configurations, making them a compelling 4G LTE solution for a variety of connected mobile devices.

Qualcomm’s latest Gobi 4G LTE connectivity reference platform includes embedded GPS capability and features an application programming interface (API) with LTE extensions, which is compatible with leading connectivity standards, including CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B, HSPA+, dual-carrier HSPA+, TD-SCDMA and LTE, with integrated backwards compatibility to HSPA and EV-DO. The API provides a common software interface for developing connection managers, GPS applications and other manageability or security solutions that help connect, locate and manage a broad range of 3G/4G devices, regardless of wireless technology and operating system. This interface will help streamline product development efforts, spur application development among third-party software developers, and deliver greater flexibility to device manufacturers.
