Über den Standard, der speziell für kurze Übertragungsstrecken ausgelegt ist, könnten zukünftige iPhones mit einer Vielzahl von Elektrogeräten wie z.B. Computern, digitalen Kameras, Fernsehern und anderen Unterhaltungs-Geräten, und sogar Thermostaten und Garagentor-Öffnern kommunizieren.

Apple-Patentantrag zu Near Field Communication am iPhone

Der Patentantrag beschreibt eine Technik, um eine ganze Reihe von elektronischen Geräten mit einem NFC-fähigen iPhone zu kontrollieren:

Functions may include „receiving control information associated with a controllable electronic device via near field communication, determining a control scheme for controlling the controllable electronic device based on the control information, and controlling the controllable electronic device using the determined control scheme. The control information may be received from a near field communication interface of the controllable electronic device or from a radio frequency identification tag associated with the controllable electronic device.“

Besonders in Verbindung mit den auch dort beschriebenen -Chips ist das Potential dieser Technologie praktisch unbegrenzt.
