iOS 5: Updates Over-the-Air, ohne iTunes?

Für ein Firmware-Update von iPhone, iPad und iPod Touch muss bekanntlich eine kabelgebundene Verbindung (USB) zu einem Computer hergestellt werden, das Update wird anschließend über iTunes initiiert und installiert.
Bei AppleTV besteht dagegen auch die Möglichkeit, ganz ohne iTunes zu updaten.

Die Software-mäßige Realisierung solcher Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates ist also in iOS bereits vorhanden. Mit iOS 5 könnten sie, wie 9to5Mac berichtet, auch für iPhone & Co. Realität werden und den Update-Vorgang vereinfachen:

Now, Apple wants to provide the same convenience to their iPhone users and is preparing to provide over-the-air iOS updates, starting this fall.

Multiple sources (one as far back as March) say the new feature will debut in iOS 5, meaning iOS 5 will not come over-the-air but following point updates to it will. Just like tethering in iOS 3, Apple has the technology but cannot just unleash it everywhere. Apple and Verizon Wireless are said to have been in talks over these wireless software updates since early this year. Sources could not comment on whether or not Apple is negotiating similar deals with AT&T or international iPhone carriers.

Apple ist, dem Bericht zufolge, bereits in Verhandlungen mit US-Provider Verizon (und möglicherweise bereits mit mehreren internationalen Providern), die aufgrund der großen Datenmengen einem solchen Update-Modus zustimmen müssen. Sollte es keine solche Provider-Zustimmung geben, wird vermutlich der traditionelle USB-Weg erhalten bleiben.
