Viele von unseren Lesern können sich vermutlich noch daran erinnern, dass bei der CES 2011, schon einige Wochen vor der offiziellen Produktpräsentation, iPad 2 Dummys aufgetaucht sind. Die echten „Case Mockups“, die Editor zu Gesicht bekam, stellten sich als äußerst detailgetreu und authentisch heraus.

Auch bei der letzte Woche abgehaltenen CES 2012 will Horwitz wieder ein der nächsten Generation gesichtet haben.
Er konnte zwar keine Fotos machen (im Bild oben ein Mockup), gibt aber einige interessante Anmerkungen, die im Einklang mit den wichtigsten iPad 3 Gerüchten stehen, preis: Das soll tatsächlich geringfügig dicker als die aktuelle Generation sein, um im Inneren Platz für neue Technik zu machen:

The new iPad's body is so slightly thicker than the iPad 2 that the change is unnoticeable on first inspection; a roughly 1mm increase will barely be perceptible to users. We've heard that the only accessories that might have issues are cases, and then, only cases that were precisely contoured to fit the iPad 2's back. […] Switch, button, speaker, and other elements located on the side edges are all the same, as are the headphone and Dock Connector ports. In other words, last year's accessories should generally work properly with the new model, which is great.

Die Kamera sei, beim direkten Vergleich mit einem iPad 2, merklich größer (und daher erneuert/besser?), aus der Ferne aber kaum als Änderung zu erkennen. Das Kameraloch war seiner Beschreibung zufolge etwas größer, mit einem silbernen Ring umgeben, und wirkte so wie die verbesserte iPhone 4S Kamera, nur ohne Blitz.

On the rear, the camera in the upper left corner has become bigger—noticeably so when placed alongside the iPad 2, but not so huge that anyone would think they were different at a distance. The new camera hole is silver-ringed, and does in fact look the same size as the iPhone 4S's much-improved rear camera system, minus the LED flash.

Das Gerät war aber nicht brandneu, sondern sah schon so aus als wäre es „über ein halbes Jahr alt“. Möglicherweise handelte es sich um einen Pre-Production Prototypen?
